The Anti-Drug Abuse Act of 1986 increased penalties for crack cocaine possession and usage. It mandated a mandatory minimum sentence of five years without parole for possession of five grams of crack; to receive the same sentence with powder cocaine one had to have 500 grams.56 This sentencing disparity was reduced from 100-to-1 to 18-to-1 by the Fair Sentencing Act of 2010. The task of introducing of the drug into the body further presents a series of health risks. Crack cannot be snorted like regular cocaine, so smoking is the most common consumption method. Crack has a melting point of around 90 °C (194 °F), and the smoke does not remain potent for long. Therefore, crack pipes are generally very short, to minimise the time between evaporating and losing strength.

Psychological effects

Subsequent significant contributions to understanding the synthetic pathway and stereochemistry were made by Robert Robinson and Edward Leete. They can also ostensibly be used for legal purposes, including applying the hole “on the top of an eucalyptus bottle” for inhaling aromas or moisture.45 However, there is a lack of evidence that such devices are used in this manner by ordinary individuals. In the US general population, the estimated background risk of major birth defects and miscarriage in clinically recognized pregnancies is 2% to 4% and 15% to 20%, respectively. Whether these systemic reactions and rash have a common underlying cause or are due to different etiologies or pathogenic processes is not known. Furthermore, a specific underlying immunologic basis for these reactions has not been identified.

Avoid driving or hazardous activity until you know how this medicine will affect you. Check with your doctor right away if you have decreased interest in sexual intercourse, delayed or inability to have an orgasm in women, inability to have or keep an erection in men, or loss in sexual ability, desire, drive, or performance. This medicine may cause some people to become drowsy or less able to think clearly, or to have poor muscle control.

15 Discontinuation Adverse Reactions

Do not use fluoxetine with thioridazine, linezolid, pimozide, or methylene blue injection. Note that this list is not all-inclusive and includes only common medications that may interact with fluoxetine. 2 Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Some young people have thoughts about suicide when first taking an antidepressant. Your family or other caregivers should also be alert to changes in your mood or symptoms. Use this medicine (fluoxetine capsules and tablets) as ordered by your doctor. Do not stop using FLUoxetine (Eqv-PROzac) suddenly, or you could have unpleasant symptoms (such as agitation, confusion, tingling or electric shock feelings). Tell your doctor if you have any changes in sexual function, such as loss of interest in sex, difficulty having an orgasm, or (in men) problems with erections or ejaculation. Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction (hives, difficult breathing, swelling in your face or throat) or a severe skin reaction (fever, sore throat, burning eyes, skin pain, red or purple skin rash with blistering and peeling).

Because clinical trials are conducted under widely varying conditions, adverse reaction rates observed in the clinical trials of a drug cannot be directly compared to rates in the clinical trials of another drug and may not reflect or predict the rates observed in practice. Pimozide and thioridazine are contraindicated for use with fluoxetine. Avoid the concomitant use of drugs known to prolong the QT interval. Since the introduction of fluoxetine, systemic reactions, possibly related to vasculitis and including lupus-like syndrome, have developed in patients with rash. Although these reactions are rare, they may be serious, involving the lung, kidney, or liver. Death has been reported to occur in association with these systemic reactions.

Older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of this medication. FLUoxetine (Eqv-PROzac) may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide. 3 Bulimia Nervosa

In US fluoxetine clinical trials, 0.7% of 10,782 patients reported mania/hypomania see USE IN SPECIFIC POPULATIONS (8.4). Postmarketing cases of QT interval prolongation and ventricular arrhythmia including Torsades de Pointes have been fluoxetine: side effects, dosage, uses, and more reported in patients treated with fluoxetine. Fluoxetine should be used with caution in patients with congenital long QT syndrome; a previous history of QT prolongation; a family history of long QT syndrome or sudden cardiac death; and other conditions that predispose to QT prolongation and ventricular arrhythmia.

Adverse Reactions/Side Effects

Administer doses above 20 mg/day once daily in the morning or twice daily (i.e., morning and noon). This list is not complete and many other drugs may interact with fluoxetine. This includes prescription and over-the-counter medicines, vitamins, and herbal products. Prozac is used to treat major depressive disorder, bulimia nervosa (an eating disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorder, panic disorder, and premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD). Advise patients that use of fluoxetine may cause symptoms of sexual dysfunction in both male and female patients. Inform patients that they should discuss any changes in sexual function and potential management strategies with their healthcare provider see WARNINGS AND PRECAUTIONS (5.16).

There has been a long-standing concern, however, that antidepressants may have a role in inducing worsening of depression and the emergence of suicidality in certain patients during the early phases of treatment. In US placebo-controlled clinical trials for MDD, 11% of patients treated with fluoxetine and 2% of patients treated with placebo reported anorexia (decreased appetite). Weight loss was reported in 1.4% of patients treated with fluoxetine and in 0.5% of patients treated with placebo. However, only rarely have patients discontinued treatment with fluoxetine because of anorexia or weight loss see USE IN SPECIFIC POPULATIONS (8.4).
